Door to the Abyss ■
Door to the Abyss ■
Artist Statement: "This artwork is a symbol for overcoming one's fears of the unknown.
The Abyss used to frighten me. It represented everything I focused my attention onto, and sometimes my attention could be caught in a loop of possibilities.
I used to see possibilities as a corridor of doors going off into the abyss. What door I chose was my choice but what existed behind that door was a mystery.
They say when you stare long into the abyss, the abyss stares back into you. On the internet, they call it 'The Backrooms' where you get stuck in a part of the game where nothing happens, there are just corridors forever, there is no escape. I never wanted life to feel like a backroom, an endless abyss of corridors.
At the end of the corridor I saw the last door, the one we all go through when we die. That was the only door I knew the contents of, and therefore I began to think every other door was the same.
I have realised the abyss should fill you with everything you want to see. So when you stare into it, you become what you want to see in the world.
This is why it feels very special to me to paint this door. There is nothing behind it but the whole world. The greatest corridor you could ever be in."
